Hennepin Co. Sheriff Battling Medication Abuse | Community Spirit

As neighbors gather to talk about their communities for their "National Night Out" and "Night to Unite" events...the Hennepin County Sheriff's office will be sharing information at more than 70 events in 22 communities about medication abuse.

Sheriff's deputies will be asking people for help reduce the amount of unwanted medications in their own homes so the drugs can't be diverted, misused or accidentally ingested by children.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, it's an epidemic and the fastest growing type of drug abuse in the U.S.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office recommends residents get rid of them at one of the county's "Medicine Collection Events."

They also suggest putting prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines in a safe place at home, and talking to your kids about the dangers of abuse.

This year sheriff's deputies will be visiting events in communities such as Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Greenfield, Minneapolis and New Hope.
